According to data from Abracopel (Associação Brasileira de Conscientização para os Perigos da Eletricidade), a brazilian association for awareness of the dangers of electricity, in the last five years, electrical accidents have surpassed dengue deaths in the country — where there is one of Polyexcel’s affiliates.
From 2015 to 2019, electrical accident statistics resulted in 3,585 accidents caused by electricity in Brazil. Among the main reasons are: electrical shock (3,135), fires (231) and atmospheric discharges (219).
In the first half of 2020, 741 occurrences and 398 deaths caused by accidents with electricity were recorded. This means that if we look at the first six months of the year we will have an average of four incidents caused by electricity per day.
Still according to the study, the data released are far from the real ones, which should be much higher. After all, only official cases are computed, that is, reported to the authorities.
Why do these accidents occur?
In general, domestic accidents with electricity occur due to poorly made installations and low-quality wiring. Doing the installation without a qualified professional is a reason that increases the risks, such as shocks, in houses, sites, apartments and farms.
Although the data show that the first half of 2019 had a higher number of accidents with electricity than in 2020, it is important to note that this year there was a pandemic. This factor caused a decrease in external activities, increasing people’s perception of possible problems in their homes.
However, this does not mean that homes and businesses are free of electrical accidents. After all, this atypical moment is changing the reality of many people, bringing numbers that are not so accurate.
In addition, many cases of electric shock accidents are not added to the list of occurrences, as these deaths are treated as another reason. One example of electrical accident is the electrical shock, for example, which is often considered death by fall.
How to solve this problem?
When talking about electrical accident prevention, it is important to never handle an electronic equipment barefoot. That’s because this attitude can make your body function as a conductor during electrical discharge. Also, avoid touching the shower when talking on the phone or while it is charging.
Water is the enemy of electronic devices, so always keep them away from sinks and any other water source to avoid short circuits. In cases of storms, it is recommended that you move away from the electronics, because the rays can generate power surges, making the devices conducting discharge.
The quality of the wires and cables added to the electrical installations are other factors to consider when thinking about how to prevent electrical accidents. It is worth checking if your product has polymeric compounds in its isolation. With them, the cable gains protective features that help increase the safety of the site.
Do you know Polyexcel solutions?
